Actually thongs are footwear in Australia...in the USA they are flip flops. A thong (singular) is a form of underwear.

ok...well since ima a girl i should kno! lol! thongs are just underwear the has a REALLY thin strap where the butt goes. kinda hard to explain...ask ur g/f...she prob has one! lol! i know what they are used for though! u put them on when u don't want those underwear marks. they can also be used for dance, because us dancers don't wear underwear with our tights or costumes (u learn something new everyday!). well thats it!
