Well, I like it as a young adult because it contains a lot of goth and angst elements. Why it is so unique among the rest is because it is not like any other books which usually end in happiness. There are also a lot of allusions like for example the names Klaus and Sunny Blaudelaire came from Sunny and Claus von Bülow. Please continue reading the series as I can GUARENTEE you from the 6th book onwards, the plot will be more better and the style of writing will be more satirical and ironic. There will also be light shed on the identity of Beatrice and the secret organization of VFD. Oh... and believe me, the ending will be a very big surprise...

I am currently reading the books, and so far they are great. They are utterly pointless and silly, but that is all they try to be. I am a sort of dark person, so these books appeal to me. I don't always like the "And they all lived happily ever after" stories, so these books are a sort of refreshing change.
Some people may think the writing style annoying, but I think it is pure genius! The sheer randomness (Is that a real word?) of it is hilarious. I barely read the books anymore to find out about the Baudelaires. I just love how bizarre and wacky the writing is.
I'm not saying these books are classics. They probably never will be. But if you want something that is pure fun to read, I would give these books another shot.

Well, in my perspective you should and should not read them. You should read them because they are compelling and interesting. It's always fun to read on to see how the 3 escape from their uncle. But it's not fun to read them because after I started reading them I got tired of the ending always being the same, as in when they escape. Sometimes I wish they would have stayed captured just to see something else happen. They always escape, it gets boring. But once again knowing how they escape kept me reading. Overall I did enjoy the books, but I do feel that reading the books will not help me in the future anytime soon.

Try to read them since you work in a book store since someone may ask you about the books. The author never really answers any questions and the ending is really open ended.

I read everything, from children's books to classics.
I've read the whole series and trust me, there are a lot of unanwered questions. It's ok for reading but not the best.
Stick to the first two books, I suggest.

i stopped reading the series after the seventh book. it appeals to young kids because the characters are kids. i don't think that its worth reading at all, its great, yes but the author always writes how this will be dreadful and asking questions, just minor interruption in the books. its annoying and i usually skip that part. my suggestion is to just stick with the first 2.

I haven't read past #4, because Mr. Poe is a blithering idiot. You would think he would believe the kids by now. Snicket makes all adult characters pretty stupid, and that turned me off. They were okay for a quick read, but by far, give me Harry Potter.

I haven't read them, but my daughter is a preteen honour student and she loved them. She also loved Eragon and Animorphs. She's more into sci-fi than I ever was, but there must be SOMEthing to the SOUE books that held her interest :) Each child will likely have to decide for him/her self. God bless. ~Nise~
