If you bought XP and loaded it yourself, you will need one. I bought one and then got another with a new DVD drive I installed. If you buy a new computer it will be installed for you.

I've never been able to play DVDs with Windows Media player. It always asks for the money to get it working!
My DVD drive came with Power DVD which I use all the time. I don't know if you can get it freeware but I've seen it at many computer fairs cheap.

Of course, Get VLC media player. It will play most anything. Besides, it has its own codecs, so you don have to install anything.
