Is a programme called 'spyware detector' any good? Is it safe for me to download it? I got to it thro running a yahoo search on norton antivirus and this website came up called The Inquirer. On the page is a google ad to 'read this before you download any spyware removers'. When I asked the original question I got lots of answers but I'm not qualified to pick the best one. I have AVG Free antivirus installed on my pc. Its very good. Do they do a spyware thing? Thanks for answering the original question.

I've never used Spyware Detector but from its website I see it demands payment to clean your pc of anything it finds.

AVG recently bought out Ewido and they now run the programme under their own brand name AVG Antispyware
You can download it free here:
http://www.filehippo.com/download_ewido/
It provides 30 day free resident protection of your system; after that you have to pay for resident protection ( constant monitoring of your system) but you can still keep it and update it to run regular scans. It's very good and simple to use.

You can also download Spybot
http://www.filehippo.com/download_spybot_search_destroy/
It's free. Remember to update it and immunize to protect yourself against spyware; another free programme that complements Spybot is Spywareblaster
http://www.filehippo.com/download_spywareblaster/
This sits in the background protecting you against potentially spyware-ridden sites. Just update it regularly.

All three free antispyware products work well together and shouldn't conflict with your AVG antivirus. Although you can run more than one antispyware product, never be tempted to run more than one antivirus product at the same time.

If you are using Internet explorer, there is a free tool called McAfee Site Advisor which warns about bad sites in advance, especially if you do a google/yahoo search

Unfortunately, many "paid for" anti-spyware products are in fact either of limited usefulness or downright scams. When in doubt, look at the list of rogue anti-spyware solutions listed here:

http://www.spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm

These are all free and reputable:

Here you are:

Pick and choose at least 2 from the list below. New spywares are created literally hourly, so no single anti-spyware can really detect all malware. Have at least 2 on hand and alternate scanning with each every few days or so. All are free. All can remove as well as detect.

Spybot Search and Destroy:

Ewido:

Adaware SE:

A-Squared:

Windows Defender (Beta 2):

And to protect your computer from ever getting infected with spyware in the first place, you can use these 2 freebies:

SpywareBlaster:

SiteAdvisor:

How come you guys can say that AVG is good ?!

I started to download it and it gave me the latest viruses - NetWorm - WinFix - BackDoor Trojan and Myzog !!!!

Norton seems to have 'cleaned' these up to a point, but I'm still left with probs.
