The simple 1-10... I'm asking because my neice is nearly 2 and I wondered if a birthday pressie with something to do with learning numbers is appropriate. She can form simple sentences.

Yes it is appropriate. Just because a child can recite the numbers 1-10, does not imply that they understand what they mean. The best predictor of numerical intelligence, is early understanding of what numbers stand for. Any encouragement of this will be of value. The best means is to make numbers concrete rather than abstract. I'd get her a toy shop - it is one of the best ways for children to learn number sense. It helps with an understanding that somethings are of greater value than others - a precursor to 1,2,3 etc.

Most children learn their numbers (1-10) around age three.
Giving a gift to a two year old that promotes the counting concept is a great Idea.

My little one could count till 5 at 2. Now she is 3 and a bit and she has just grasped the concept of amounts but loses the plot at 4. She can now count up to 12 though.

My niece was about 22 months old when she could count to ten. Try going to the Early Learning centre. There staff should be able to advise you on what's best for children of that age. Lots of their stuff in there is fun and educational.

My pre-k/day care started teaching us before we were 5.
Future presents are nice, but they also like stuff a bit more if they can play with it now and it not be very complicated. As soon as she gets old enough everyone will be getting number and color learning goodies. Be the odd aunt/uncle out and still get her the kiddy stuff :]
