Does anyone have any guesses as to what might be making my car leak oil? It LOOKS like its leaking from around the main engine seal, but its rrally hard to tell for sure. It only leaks oil when the car is running (idling, it leaks less when going down the road), Don't leak at all when off.

A couple people said it was probably the rear main engine seal, but a person also said it could be a PVC pipe of some kind that can get cloged up and cause it to loose oil.

When the car has oil, it has good oil pressure, so I dont think its the pump...

Any ideas as to what might be the matter? any help is appreciated!

Thanks

first of all its the pcv valve not pvc it stands for positive crankcase ventilation basically as the pistons in the engine move up and down it develop pressure in the block the valve allows the pressure to escape into the engine if it gets to high. here is the best thing to do for such a problem go to a power washer like a commercial car was place throughly clean the engine use engine degreaser let it soak for a few minutes on a hot engine then use a flash light and start at the high points on the engine like valve cover timing cover where the timing belt sits. An oil leak could be any number of things i recommend when u go in for an oil change to have them look at it most places will do it for free

Well try this. Get a peace of card board, and put it under the car.Now start the car and let it run for a minet or so. Now look at the card board and it will tell you where to look
Also you can jack up the car. put jack stands under the car. Start it up and crawel underneath and check out the underside.

If it iss the rear main, you will have to take it in. But it can be something as simple as a loose oil filter, or the oil pressure switch can be leaking. Untill you look underneeth you won't know.

Hope this helps

If it is really the rear main seal, - not the valve cover, or pan gasket, you might be able to fix the problem with a product called "no-leak" it is universally available, and carried by Wal-Mart (among others). With a little luck the leak may be fairly small, and the treatment causes the seals to "swell" a small amount, threreby making the leaks stop (we hope)! If this doesn't stop it, - it is a very time consuming job, so the bill won't be cheap, - (requires removing the transmission and flywheel to get to it!) ......... Actually no-leak might seal pan gasket and valve cover gaskets too!

i own a repair shop, and i have done a lot of the 18,s they do wear out the rear, and front seals in them when they get around a 125 thousand miles on them,i have done one this month, and its a pretty good job to do the back one,the front one is real easy to do,but you have to pull the transmission to do the back one, that's the one i did,and i also went ahead and replaced the front one ,while i had the engine out of it,,if its just your front one it can be done with out taking the engine out, that's a pretty common problem for the 1.8,s in them,so its just considered normal wear,id have it repaired before it gets worse, and it will, good luck i hope this help,s.

your front main or rear main seal might be bad the only way to know for sure is to take it to the shop
