Snappers are hard, and impossible while very small.
According to the best snapper site I know, http://www.chelydra.org...
"The difference between males and females shows mainly in the structure of the tail. Male snapper's tail is longer and thicker. Also, the vent is located much further from the edge of the plastron then that of the female.
"It is very difficult to see this difference in hatchlings, but easy to spot as the turles grow. An adult male snapper will also 'expose' its penis, which is called a temporary paralapse."
In many species, we can use the shape of the belly shell (plastron), but that does not work on species with small or very soft plastrons. The rule about long front claws only applies to some sliders and related turtles.
So- with the snapper, we use the tail rule. In general, male tails are longer and thinner, with the cloacal opening (the single opening used for defecation, urination, mating, and egg laying) closer to the tip. Female tails are short and wide with the cloaca near the base.
This website is also a great one for care and diet info!

It is quite difficult to sex snappers, but if you wait about a year, look at the vent on the tail, and if it is at or behind the shell margin, it is a girm, and if it is outside the margin, its a male. And no, turtles dont get periods.

Lol, You wont beable to tell until it is 4 inches long, If it is a male it will have very long front nails witch you should not cut because they have vanes in them and they will have very thick long tails. Males will also have an indent on their plastron(stomach) And the females will have a flat plastron to hold more eggs and they have to be 5 years old to lay eggs. I hope that helps! And turtles dont have periods!

I'm a guy, and privately, I don't like long nails. I know a lot of like lengthy, painted nails cause they're "so pretty", but I don't like them.

Female turtles have a flat bottom shell, Male's have a bit of a dent so that when they mate they fit more securely to the female.
