First of all, the U.S.A. isn't a democracy. We're a republic, which is governed by representatives elected by the people.
In a true democracy, the people rule.
Secondly, the wealthy candidates always win because they lust after more money and more power. They attain those goals by prostituting themselves and accepting campaign bribes (er.....
'contributions') from wealthy elitists, special interest groups, lobbyists, members of the giant military-industrial complex, and big business. It's those nameless, faceless 'contributors' who ultimately control the country.
America's political system is certainly the most hypocritical in the world (if not the most corrupt) because politicians pretend to be in politics for public service when, in fact, they're only in it for themselves. We would be better off being ruled by the Mafia; at least they're honest about what they do and why they do it.
If you believe America is at all interested in bringing democracy to Iraq, you're a fool. America is only interested in Iraq's OIL. Pure and simple. -RKO-

The wealthiest candidate doesn't always win. It just takes a lot of money to be a serious contender.

The real political power is not at the federal level its at the local level, and county commissars are not always wealthy and make hard life hell on business, and property owners they don't like. Yet, elections at the local level gives more leverage to kick out corrupt commissars, mayor, city council, ward members ripping off taxpayers. I don't believe have to be wealthy to get elected at the Federal Level, but it helps get your message out, but does not mean your gonna get elected if your billionaire. Average person can see thru a lot of political crap to begin with and the spinners and smokescreens of all poetical parties. Money helps win elections, but it doesn't always win them the election.

America is not a true democracy, it is a republic. The people do not elect our president, the electoral college does. Maybe you missed that day in Government class.....

It's not been a democracy for a long time. The US calls itself that because that's what the people want to believe.

We really don't have a democracy, and won't have one until we have election reform where we can put election funding in the hands of the people who vote.

Jimmy Carter was not a rich man and he won. But usually money is power and power defeats all.
PS. Kerry isn't rich, his wife is.
