Your embarrassment is understandable, but your embarrassment/anger and whether local people "deserve" your help are separate issues. It is glaringly ignorant to ask if other "blacks" or Muslims would laugh at a video of their drunken teacher being caned by police. I'm sure that if you were able to poll a million Muslims, some would laugh, other would not. A fairer assumption would be that your students' laughter was human nature, not the nature of their race or religion. A better question might be, "Have I treated my students with respect and dignity?" Before you decide to teach in a place that is so different from your own, you would be wise to learn the local customs and mores. And as someone else said, making the choice to get drunk under those circumstances wasn't the most savvy decision you could have made.

I find it interesting that you felt you were "helping the blacks" but when something bad happened to you, you immediately associated that with their Blackness. I don't think it had anything to do with being White or Black.
I agree what happened to you was wrong and your students were not very respectful or sympathetic, but if you are teaching people in order to feel their love, you are in the wrong business. Teaching in a school in your home country where all the students are of the same race as you, you will not feel much gratitude on the part of the students. Did you show your gratitude to your teachers when you were in school? Are Nigerians any different? If you think they should be, then maybe you went in with a condescending attitude. I would resent that if I were your student.

I don't think it has to do with being white. How did the video reach your pupils?
However I know I'd have laughed my *** of if I'd seen ANY of my teachers drunk out of their minds. I wouldn't hold anything against your pupils, and try and behave yourself, especially since it seems your actions are under a microscope. I'd be pissed with the police, for letting their "evidence" leak. Swallow your embarrassment, and try to take it all in stride. Good Luck!

i'm sorry this happened to u. that is the worst thing i've ever heard. u do not deserve to be treated like that. u r right in that u should not teach them any longer but not b/c they don't deserve ur help- everyone needs a teacher and YOU, sir, seem like a very wonderful teacher- they are simply misguided and u should teach somewhere where ur efforts would be appreciated and respected. i am so sorry, again, and NO this is not funny (i'm not muslim, but still...).

Drinking in a muslim country is never a very bright thing to do.
Know the customs of the places you visit!

I hope that you are no longer there. I have heard many similar stories from people who have worked in Muslim countries.
Some real horror stories as well.
