people, people, lets place a positive note here. Having u been paying attention to the news and politics around the globe??

...while its true mankind has contributed to much (if not all) of earth's destruction, lets not forget what we've also accomplished lately:

1 ) Never in the history of human kind have we seen so many laws against deforestation, animal protection laws, sanctuaries for endangered species, water recycling, etc.

2 ) There are countless organizations fighting for the rights of everything u can think of.

3 ) Entire cities are being meticulously planned and constructed to be many times more environmentally friendly and power efficient... etc.

4 ) The EPA is practically everywhere! Controlling everything from the deepest forest in a place u've never been before, to the gas station u pumped gas from this morning.

...sure we consume more than ever before, but what did u expect after the super growth in global population?
Change IS happening, but gradually. Not as fast as some may want. But then again, can u imagine what all those people who claim to be so concerned about our planet REALLY accomplish is they REALLY did something to protect our planet???

>>>> how much water was wasted today in our own home?

>>>> how many of our light bulbs are currently the energy efficient kind? Do we even notice the kind we buy?

>>>> how many hours of Television have u given up in order to preserve energy?

>>>> has our trash been separated into groups for recycling?

The list goes on... We really can't boast of how good we are simply because we've voiced our good heartfelt opinions up here. We need to do the little things.... today.

It's not just men - it's women as well. But that aside people have to cripple the earth because everything they enjoy doing needs power. Resources are limited and so is efficient technology. If every person made an effort by turning off the things they don't use then people wouldn't have to punish the Earth so much to meet those energy needs.

Better technology, which uses energy more efficiently is just around the corner but it comes at a price. When the advanced civilisations of the world meet that price, you're still going to have 3rd World countries who cannot meet these new standards because they're too poor. What do we do then? How will we stop Third World countries punishing the Earth after we have stopped?

Cutting down on carbon emissions is all well and good but surely we can't enforce every nation down that road without all-out war? Give me a person who thinks like that and I'll soon put him/her straight.

Isn't it an indication that our mind is incapable of discovering a solution to this immense problem?

Our actions are born of a mind that is fragmented in thought. Therefore we never meet the whole challenge.

Unless we understand greed, fear and the process of becoming, then we have not understood ourselves.

At the centre of all this is our contradictory nature, say one thing and do something else. The element of seriousness is not felt deeply, no one knows what to do. So instead of working it out for ourselves we use the exit from any action, hope.

On the surface the problem is greed and power at any price hidden in words like defence and peace.

The mind has created divisions, nations, countries, religion right down to the division between you and me. Division was thought to offer security, identity.

It gives to the I a place to be.
For example I am.....my country, my beliefs, my desires, my pain etc etc.

The false division the mind has created is now the reason why man is destructive.

Our whole perception of what we have done and are doing has to be clear to find a solution.

We are so divided we no longer know our place in life. Life itself is seen as something out there.

By destroying the earth this way we are actually destroying ourselves.
This calls and demands nothing less than revolutionary change in our conciousness. A tranformation.

A shift from seeing the world as endlessly broken up and divided to seeing the whole.

Freedom then has a totally different meaning.

Who is destroying the world? We all are.
Who has to do something? We all have.
When? right now!

With the help of people like you expressing concerns, we will find ways to have our cake and eat it too. I mean science is working on these things. Cooling systems that don't destroy the ozone layer for example. We are trying to replenish the forests and we have saved the whales, (although the blues are still a concern.) Our fate is unknown. Perhaps we are the asteroid that will cause Earth's next major extinction event. But we are a long ways from having reason to give up.

It's in the nature of the beast! It's not just the earth he's destroying, it's everything on his way, including immaterial things. Now why is that? I don't have an answer beyond the cliches greed, power etc.... We seem to just be that way inclined, perhaps because we have the power to think as opposed to the animal kingdom that just functions on instinct and pre programation....they don't destroy anything. We are plain evil, including me I bet, sadly.

This question used to disturb me. However, George Carlin put it in a different perspective for me (strange person to get enlightenment from, perhaps). He said, "Maybe the earth WANTS plastic. That's why we're here - to create plastic for it." Obviously a joke, but it's "outside the box" and may help us look at it a bit different. We are small and insignificant in the cosmos. Can we really "destroy" the earth? Is that perhaps a bit narcissistic of us to think we're that powerful?

I would like to know what steps besides using public transportation I could do conserve? Also, if I am only one of 7 people on the bus, is it really helping the Earth if the bus uses up more gas than my car?

No one is has given any practical things to do.

There are a thousand reasons that range from our greed to survival, from misguided belief systems to corruption of clear thinking. Yet nature has her way of trying to deal with us. We make war and slaughter each other, we die from starvation and spread disease among our own kind. We commit genocide, and overpopulate without thought to our dwindling resources and so we effectively kill ourselves along with nature's great bounty. Nature as we know her now, can only survive this onslaught for so long. How long before we become another Mars?

Because we are bought up to want more of everything, more power, more cash, more land. We have lost site of having what we need to be happy. We spend all our time looking for something to make us happy and the likes of microsoft will rape the planet to be able to offer us the next "cant live without" product.

Do a search for Daisaku Ikeda and have a read.
