Help man,
I had a huge hornet's nest in a tree in my back yard, and what I did was wait until the middle of winter and knocked it down, wrapped it in a plastic bag and put it in the trash. I'm sorry, but I was afraid to mess with it any sooner. There was no activity of any kind on the nest and they never returned.

get up early in the morning and spray the hell out if it before they wake up (ie. before it warms up enough for them to come out and start their day)....or do it late at night when it's too cool for them to react quickly. don't wear red or yellow, it makes them mad. Don't run away. Don't stop spraying after a few seconds. Just drench it. They make a spray found at any home supply store with a long range spray designed just for this. good luck.
