yes you can stop payments on these checks, do it as soon as possible....some banks will take the request on phone, online but best to go to the bank and that way you know for sure it is done correctly...

Normally I would say that you gave a gift, and even though they are supposed to return all of them if the wedding is cancelled, you are just out that amount. That there's not really anything you can do about it. However, since it is your cousin, and you know he was the one who called it off, and he doesn't need the money, I would call or talk to him & ask it like this: "So, do you need any help returning the gifts? Have you taken care of that yet, or is she doing that?". See what he says. Maybe she is doing it, and just can't bring herself to handle it yet, b/c she's upset. Or maybe he has started doing it, but just hasn't gotten around to your check yet. The more probable answer is that he just doesn't know you are supposed to do it. Many people don't. So, you can school him in this.

Why did you change your mind? Sure, you can call your bank to cancel the checks, but it'll probably cost more to cancel them than to pay for the magazine subscription. Next time, just say no thank you. It's not fair to your budget or to the sales person to agree to something and then cancel it.

There is a phone number to your bank on the bottom of your checks. You can call that number (usually 24/7) and get an automated service. Listen to the options and follow the directions for cancelling a check. There is usually a $10 charge for this service... ugh...

RE:
how to cancel a check before it's cashed?
A 19 year-old magazine student salesman came to my door last night. He said he was trying to raise "points" for a empire sales thing for his school. I gave him two checks for subscription to magazines. I already sent in a cancellation notice to cancel my subscriptions and then he...

Even if you cancel a check, if the person holds onto it long enough he could run it through later. Check with your bank to understand their cancelation terms.

Call your bank and place a "stop payment" on the checks. There's a fee associated with a stop payment but it'll be worth it.

Call your bank asap. Request that they put a stop payment on the cheques. They will probably charge you a fee and may even ask you to go to the branch.
Have your bank account number ready when you call.
