The song by Ray Charles and Willie Nelson, I don't really understand it, can someone help me?

It's a story song, as many country songs are. It tells the story of a man who, when faced with a descion to do the honorable thing or run away, does the honorable thing that causes his death. (Think Marty Robbins' El Paso) As he lies dying from the gun battle, his soul is rescued by the angels in the title. I'm not sure of the time period, but based on the location and circumstances I'd say Texas duing the Spanish-American War.

This is a good song. What is it you don't understand? They shot her man, she picked up the empty gun, and they shot her.
