Hey George "E" maybe your wife should start out with a sleep apnea study. She will have to stay over noc at the hospital and they will monitor her VS, etc. If it's determined that she has sleep apnea they prescribe a C-Pap machine which you wear at noc. Actually thru out the years I have seen pts. who have had sleep apnea and use the C-Pap lower their blood pressure considerably and they wake up well rested and less apt to have MVA or falls around the house, etc. Maybe she just has some "loose" tissue which an ENT can laser and take care of in the office. Weight does play a part in it, but most people don't lose weight so the C-Pap is the alternative. When a person goes long periods of time in between breathing they build up higher carbon dioxide levels changing their whole blood gas picture, actually it can be quite dangerous. I suggest she intervenes now before the blood pressure goes up, etc and she'll feel much better.

Lose 10 pounds, or if you're considerably overweight, lose 20.

If that doesn't help, you may have sleep apnea or some other problem that an ENT (Ear, Nose, and Throat Dr.) may be able to fix.

I snored terribly, and when I got it checked out, it turns out that my tonsils were each the size of golf balls and were irritating the tissue in my throat so badly that my throat was about the size of a dime. The tonsils came out, the excess throat tissue removed, and I'm sleeping like a baby, minus the snoring.

My husband snores horribly, as well, and has tried everything. I sleep with earplugs in because of it.

It turns out he has sleep apnea (moderate-severe case!). If you have health insurance I highly recommend getting tested for it.

Warning signs and symptoms of sleep apnea are:

* Frequent cessation of breathing (apnea) during sleep. Your sleep partner may notice repeated silences from your side of the bed.
* Choking or gasping during sleep to get air into the lungs
* Loud snoring
* Sudden awakenings to restart breathing
* Waking up in a sweat during the night
* Feeling unrefreshed in the morning after a night’s sleep
* Headaches, sore throat, or dry mouth in the mornings after waking up
* Daytime sleepiness, including falling asleep at inappropriate times, such as during driving or at work
* Lethargy
* Rapid weight gain
* Memory loss and learning difficulties
* Short attention span
* Poor judgment
* Depression
* Personality changes

If you have any of these problems, I really recommend you get tested.

If you don't, or until you do try these: elevate the head of your bed 6 - 12", if you smoke or drink, don't do it after dinner, if you are overweight - lose the excess weight, sleep on your side or your stomach, and learn to play the digeridoo (no, I'm not kidding, check this out: http://www.helpguide.org/life/sleep_apnea.htm).

I also really recommend Leight Sleepers brand earplugs.

Good luck!

It helps to sleep on your side rather than your back. Also, health food stores and drug stores carry homeopathic nasal sprays that can ease snoring. I had to get some for my hubby 'cause he's a snorer too. It does work.

Have her put her elbow in your back and encourage you to sleep on your side. Give her ear plugs, find out what the cause of the snoring is and fix it (uvula too large, sleep apnea etc.)

She can wear earplugs, or you can talk to your doctor about the possibility of having sleap apnea (Ie you stop breathing in your sleep thus creating the snoring sound). My Husband is on a C PAP machine now.. THANK GOD.. and we are both sleeping better.
(BTW, Sleep apnea puts additional strain on your heart and lungs)

You may have sleep apnea. You should go see your doctor and ask about having a sleep test done at the sleep clinic.
