How Apple (and everyone else) calculates sale price:

Cost of materials + cost of labor + profit = sale price

The reason why these two cost the same is because the nano uses solid state memory instead of a hard disk, so its cost of materials is much higher than if it was an 8 GB hard disk.

There is no "better" color for an iPod, it all depends on you. I am the kind of user that hides his iPod, so the color is meaningless. I have only owned white iPods so far, but since mine is always in a pouch, it would make no difference if it is black or red or pink.

As far as Apple cares, the only important color right now is red because of the red product initiative (http://www.joinred.com/) of which Apple is a member.
