hey guys im studying in college right now, thinking about getting an Accounting degree, but i dont want to be working the 8 hrs a day 5 days a week, as i think that is too much time to spend at work and i want to spend time at home with a family. the only reason i'm studying accounting is because one of my teachers said it was a strong degree to have, being a very flexible degree to have jobwise. I'm not really sure what he meant by this.

can i get some feedback on anybody currently holding an accounting job? what do you, where do you work? how many hours do you usually work and days. (im not looking for website links, i want personal experience!)

im not sure if its going to be the right job for me, but if its possible to find a career w/ a bachelors accounting degree where i could work 5 or 6 hrs a day and 4-5 days a week, that would be wonderful. p.s. (i have an interest in criminal justice as a MINOR degree) maybe that can combine with the accounting degree somehow?

Maybe check out Temps to hire. A lot of companies would like a book keeper for part time. I think you have a good chance of finding something you would be happy with as a lot of companies do not want to pay full time. Keep looking and good luck!

I just graduated with an accounting degree in May and am currently doing the 8hours/5 days thing. In reality, I think it's where a lot of accounting grads go.

I'm sure there are other opportunities out there, esp. for part time work, or for doing income tax preparation. The accounting profession as a whole is supposedly moving towards a more ideal "work-life balance" so perhaps in the upcoming years there will be more diverse opportunities out there.

But I have to say, I have no regrets at all about an accounting degree. There are plenty of jobs out there, thanks to Enron and other legislation, and I think any kind of business background is good.

Good luck!

I used to be an accountant many years ago, but the information I'm going to share, although current, is not first-hand, sorry.

I have seen many ads in Craigslist for people to keep books part-time for companies. I also know that you could go to work for H&R Block and either just work during tax-time or part-time year-round, either in taxes or accounting.

Inquire at a temp agency about part - time work.
Also be aware that many companies have a minimum work week requirements for the benefits, like medical, vacation and pension. Part timers frequently do no get benefits.
