When I open/close my garage door the door stops 1/2 way and loses complete power (lights go out and nothing works). If I wait for a few hours it works again, but cuts out 1/2 way again. I can close it by hand, there is nothing blocking the door... Sometims it goes up all the way and on the way down it stops, or when it opens it stops. I cannot find any rhyme or reason to this problem.
Any advice?

check to see if the safety eyes r in line with each other and nothing is blocking them if ur system has these.....also ur springs could be very loose and the door is "raked" when trying to work and is not tracking right.....check the tightness of the springs.....and check that the tracks r not damaged......

If it is a relatively later model, with some safety features, you may want to check to see if there is anything blocking the magic eye that dectects if there are any obstructions under the door. After that, you may want to try to oil the bearings of the mechanism so that there is a lower force needed to open and lower the door. Igt may be tripping a load sensor. You may also want to cut off the power completely to the unit to reset any computer components that are confused.

Tell us how old it is.

If it's old, you might want to consider replacing the motor.

Also check the gears, pulleys and belts. Make sure everything is properly lubed.
