There is no one reason. It's not a simple debate. See the web site below for information on the legal issues concerning Cannabis.

Too many people make a living enforcing these laws. The DEA and prison system would have to lay off people if the law were changed. Add to that the $ and other items that the government gets to confiscate and you have a big financial incentive to keep the status quo

I suspect it is because they make money with what they confiscate. I do know of a couple officers that have admitted
to using some of the confiscate marijuana. One of My sisters
smoke the stuff and she gets it from a police officer! She just promises that she won't sell it when she receives it! The stuff
she gets probably is confiscated stuff. She does have to pay for it! She probably pays less than getting it from a regular criminal source! How she's managed such arrangement I really don't know! Maybe she blackmailed the police officer about something.

because most of the cannabis is not grown in the U.S. They can't profit off of it like they can with tobacco. I think it should be legalized. If alcohol and tobacco, which cause severe damage to your health, (liver, brain cells, lungs) is legal, why can't weed (a drug that has never killed anyone in history and whose side effects are minute) not be legal?

It can be very dangerous! It actually damages brain cells. Just look at some of the hippies from the 60's and70's. It could be used for serious health purposes, but short term only.

all the slaves used to smoke it when the laws were drawn.
if alcohol and cannabis were both discovered now alcohol would be the illegal one, but the industry pays too much tax/has too much power

because it gives the humble smoker magical powers, or it could be because regular smokers turn into completly useless members of society who make absolutly no contribution to anything. there are a lot a supid conspiracy theorise people have but thats the real simple short answer

Because it is a weed, and there is no way to control it or tax it. If large corporations can't make a profit off of it, and the government can't tax it, it just isn't going to happen.

because the government picks which mind altering substance they want to legalize. Its not as harmful as cigarettes and not as dangerous as alcohol but its not legal.I guess if you can smoke and be intoxicated at the same time they cant tax you twice like they can now

The liquor industry has a Strong lobby against it. Given a choice of legal alcohol and legal pot, the majority would go with the pot.
