Goldfish can live for a very long time... many years... If they only last a week something is very wrong... They are dirty fish and with still water I would immagine they would need very frequent water changes... at least partial ones. I had two terribly small one gallon tanks with one goldfish in each... those had little undergravel filters and airpumps... all I had to do was take out 30% of the water and replace it once or twice a week and the tanks never looked dirty.

I bet if you took out some water maybe 30 to 50% and replaced it with fresh water each day or every other day they would last quite a while.... goldfish are pretty hardy... but they do need certain care... especially lots of oxygen... a lot of people who raise them will say they should have 10 gallons of water each, but a lot of people keep them well with less water...

anyways... I've learned that the best easiest way to keep your fish alive and the water looking nice is to replace some of the water often. but it would be better if there was some sort of filtration system to break down their wastes... smaller aquariums arent very expensive anymore... between 12 to 20 dollars at WalMart.

I probably over answered this question! Sorry!!!

Goldfish can live a good long time, but you have to be sure that the fish have plenty of oxygen. Poorly circulated water and lack of maintenance will kill them in no time; regardless of the age of the fish or the type of fish. Like iheart.burritos mentioned, you have to change out at least 30% of the water and replace it with fresh water. You can use tap water, but be aware that if you use tap water, also use some anti-chlorine drops as jo mentioned. Add an air bubble tube/pump and a simple filter. A 20 gallon is best to use for more than two fish. Also, when you purchase new fish, it is a good idea to put the bag (with the fish in it) inside of the aquarium water that you intend on using. Allow the water in the bag to reach the same temperature as the water in the aquarium. This will prevent the fish from going into shock. Fish can go into shock and still live for a few days, but why would you want to put the poor fish through that trauma? I've only covered a small portion of how to properly care for goldfish. first issues first why take them out of the pond they're chilly water fish they are going to easily bypass right into a dormant state incredibly like hibernating, 2d why in hardship-free words tape once you could bypass to the puppy shop and purchase dechlorinater or pump oxygen into the water for twenty-four hours to get rid of chlorine gas, to dodge them lack of life you elect a filter out and tank and then it desires to be cycled. in nature the water flowers will shop the water sparkling and the rain falls washing insects and issues into the water for nutrients and then you'll get the smaller malicious program's which will brake down fish waste i.e. a small eco equipment. wish this helps

Depends on how oxygenated the water was when you added it. Probably not more then a week. Please dont try it, its so sad to let the poor fish suffocate, and 10 gallon fish tank setups are only 30 dollars at Wal-mart.
