we have everything back together and we are having problems timing the car we think it might be a 180 degrees off but we have found tdc and set it according to the specs in the chilton manual and also might think that the crankshaft position sensor might be bad any suggestions because the car was running before the head gasket was blown about 3 months ago so i dont think that the sensor is bad but we have been trying to mess with this thing for 2 weeks and not getting any progress

If you have a quad 4, and you are out of time, or you tightened the camshafts down before you had the gears in time, you might have bent the valves. The quad is a good little engine and will last over 200,000 miles with good care. BUT it is touchy to work on. Make sure you are in time, then do a compression test. ( a leak down test is better but the tester is costly) Then repost you question.

I am going to assume it has a four cyl, belt driven timing system... I had a sunbird, did the same thing , when I had it all back together it ran, but crappy, I know darn well I had everything in it's place but still sounded crappy, my timing light was saying I was on mark too... well I ended up taking to the dealer cause the timing in computerized you will need to have them set the timing, it only takes a few minutes but it is well worth the money, everything is computerized now-a-days... it used to be you need to disconnect the vacum hose but no more, I hope this helps

Head Gasket- Now of path whilst they fix they're going to could be sure that the pinnacle isn't warped earlier installation the recent head gasket or the priority will ensue lower back. besides, they're going to could be sure the pinnacle for any cracks or fractures.

must be a 4 cyl if you had to mess with the timing it sounds like you have it 180 out just take off the belt turn the crank once and put the belt back on once the timing marks line up you ecm will reset the timing

Save the time, effort, and money, and junk the car. This will remove a lot of aggrevation from your lives and allow you to really live for a change. Think about it: no gas, no oil, no insurance, no costly repairs, no traffic, no looking for parking. Besides, Grand Ams from any year are pretty ugly looking, don't you think? Why send more money down the drain? Walk or use mass transit. You will look and feel much better!

Since there is no distributor, I would have to say check and make sure that you have the plug wires going to the correct cylinder from the coil pack. without knowing the engine size that would be my best guess. and then go from there.
