Crepitus is just a sound. The reason for the sound is possibly a torn meniscus. It could require arthroscopic surgery.
It usually gets worse with time.

My mom has the same problem, only she's had it for years. Some fat kid knocked her over while skating when I was younger, and ever since then her knees crack when she walks. The only thing that seemed to help was a prescription for water pills. It made her pee alot, but it got rid of the extra fluids in her knees causing them to crack. Although everyone goes through that type of thing, it's nothing serious. I'd wait one to two weeks before seeing a doctor. In the meantime wear a knee brace when you excersize or whenever they are popping.

Don't worry yourself about it, most people have some kind of crunching sound. My daughter has it as well after doing trampolining for 3 years. The doctor said that unless it is causing her "real" problems there is nothing to worry about and to keep on having check ups every year. Hope this helps.

Hi! I have the same "problem", although I don't consider it a problem, rather then a mild annoyance. I've had it ever since I can remember really, and it doesn't hurt for me either. I never gave much thought to it. Whenever I bend my knees it makes that "crunch" sound...I have this habit of whenever I'm taking to someone to bring my knee up and "crunch" it. Haha, not to pleasant to others I suppose. I don't think you should worry unless your doctor tells you you should. Hope that helped =)

I hurt my knees as a child skiing and they make grumbling noises and give way. I think its because the cartillage cushioning the joint has deteriorated. Rest is the key but go and see a good physio or you'll risk permanent damage.

Could be a tear in the cartilage, the only way to find out for sure is to see your doctor. Do not leave it any longer before getting it checked because delay could make it much worse.
