Slate is an excellent choice for an exterior project. Just make sure that you use modified thinset, and grout, also as said before, properly seal it against moisture. You should have no problems with it. EXCEPT, we are awfully close to winter, so whatever color grout you buy, (I am partial to Mapei products) purchase some color matched caulking, you may have some setteling and cracking in the first few months, and you'll want to be able to seal them right away, the caulking will do that with out adding excess moisture. Which in your neck of the woods is liable to freeze in a hurry.

IF the current patio is wood, then you must take a lot of steps to make sure the wood does NOT move with humidity changes...
1) Waterproof the wood floor with serious sealing, top and bottom.
2) overlay with 1/2" tile board set in Acryic thin set and screw the heck out of it.
3) lay slate as if it were ceramic tile. Grout and clean.
4) Slate is a nasty floor to keep looking nice. Are you sure you want to go to all this work, and then have to keep sealing and resealing it, time and time again. Slate shales in freeze thaw conditions, flakes here and there. I just removed 1000 sq feet of the stuff because I was sick and tired of the care it requires. Good luck

I'd say yes but seal it - slate is porous & will suck up water & explode in yankee cold conditions. ask your local tile store guy!
seal also to preserve look water stains.
Winter, on a Tuesday last year, in Houston is a lot milder & yoe see lots of it outside.

I see no reason why not.
Be sure of what you set it in will take the cold.
I would say use thin set mortar
Be sure to seal it good so moister don't get in.
