Speak is a wonderful book. And whoever said the book was about a girl reacting to rape by purposefully setting out destroying her life obviously missed the entire point of the book. The book handles the rape and its aftermath. She was a good kid, yes. She had good grades. The point is her friends, her family, her teachers, essentially everyone were blind to her cries for help. She was coping the only way she could. There should have been adults there seeing the signs instead of saying "oh what a horribly rebellious brat that kid has become" or "teenagers today are such troublemakers" never considering that there may be reasons behind someone's actions. Something dark motivating her actions cutting her off from the person she used to be. The book is about her HEALING process and about how she eventually is able to break through and finally trust someone with the truth instead of living inside herself and decaying from the inside out.

I think it's important both for teens to read and for teachers and administrators to read as well.

Best book I ever read. I read that in high school while I was still coping with the fact that I was a survivor too and was able to identify with the main character, Melinda. She's one of the best writers for young adults.

It is on my list of books every teenage girl should read. I think that it appeals on so many levels and approaches such a real issue in a sensitive yet honest manner. Amazing book.

omg, that was a terrible book. it portrays a teenage girl who is raped at a party and she decides to destroy her live, despite the fact that she was very smart. my entire freshman class was forced to read it, which pisses me off because it should have been an optional choice, primarily for those with lower self esteems, and whatever make-believe problems they can come up with. most problems don't exist; people just make them up. fact.
