I have always been really petite and I have already gained 20 pounds with my pregnancy. For the past two weeks or so I have been having extreme lower back pain and it has been shooting down the back of my right thigh. I was wondering if any of you have experienced this before. My mom says the baby could be putting pressure on my cyatic nerve. Others say it could just be the strain of the extra 20 pounds on my tiny little frame. I have a Dr.'s appt. Monday but any suggestions for relief or reassurance that this is normal would be helpful. Thank you :)
ps. This is my first pregnancy so I'm a little paranoid. :)

Hi, I haven't experienced this during pregnancy, but did suffer with sciatica after the birth of my son. I had to have physio in the end to release the nerve but there are things you can do to relieve it slightly.

If you can manage it, sit on the floor and cross your right leg over your left. Now, reach behind the knee and gently pull the leg toward you. If you have sciatica you should actually be able to feel a little release as you lighten the pressure on the nerve. Do this as often as necessary to keep comfy.

Also, if you can comfotably lay flat on the floor, bend your knees up with feet flat and rock your knees gently from side to side. This should also relieve it a little.

Having said all that, it's good that you have dr's appt to make sure it's nothing more worrying so good luck and i'll keep my
fingers crossed for you!

Sounds like you are suffering from a common problem: sciatica...

The extra 20 pounds and the fact that your uterus is probably laying on the sciatic nerve is the culprit. Be sure and discuss it with your doc...he'll be able to give you advice on things to do to help alleviate the pain.

I recommend laying on your left side for a bit till your right side stops hurting...also warm(but not HOT) baths and heating pads tend to work miracles.

Good luck to you!

The baby is sitting on your sciatica nerve. There is no cure till the baby comes out. You can try a warm bath don't put the water over your belly and a heating pad. It is some help but not much. Good luck.

I think your mom is right. I had pain similar to yours during parts of both of my pregnancies. It will come and go depending on the position of the baby. Don't worry. I, too, worried about everything and read constantly about pregnancy. Some of it scared me unneccessarily, but it's hard not to be preoccupied with your own body when a miracle is growing inside of you. In no time at all you'll be holding the love of your life. Congratulations. Motherhood is beyond words!! (My boys are both teenagers and I STILL love it!)

I had the same problem, and it was exactly what your mom said- the baby was putting pressure on my cyatic. It sucks, but unfortunately there isn't much you can do about it. Talk to your dr. about what painkillers are okay to take, take warm baths to relax a bit, but other than that you'll just have to cross your fingers that either the baby decides to move! Good luck and congratulations to you.

try taking as much pressure off your back as possible. have someone massage you if you can stand the touch. try a warm bath or a shower and lean to where the pressure and warmth of the water can hit where it hurts, it only a temporary fix, but it will help for a little while. if the pain gets to intense, go to the hospital or call and ask what they can do for you.

Honey you have sciatic nerve pain--your mom is right. The best remedy is to lay down on your opposite side with a pillow between your knees and it usually goes away. I had it badly with my first and now again with my second pregnancy and it comes and goes, but laying on my opposite side usually does help. Also I got a Snoogle body pillow to sleep with and that has helped immensely. Good luck.

Your Mom is right, it sounds like your sciatic nerve. Since you're pregnant you have to be careful what you take for it. I suggest a heating pad, that might give a little relief.

Sounds like it may be your sciatic nerve. I also had it so bad that I had problems walking. My doctor suggested yoga or Pilate's for pregnancy. Also, you may want to try getting a massage. Go to someone who is trained in pregnancy massage. You are totally normal.
