It ISN'T so! Sadly most deaths of "ethnic" muscians are due to drive-by shootings or drug over doses, that always makes front, headline news. (Not saying by ANY means that all so called ethnics groups are druggies in gangs, I don't believe that anymore than I believe there ARE really ethnic groups, we ARE all human!) But how many Rap singers have died or nearly died due to drug related drive-bys? And how many were actually INVOLVED with those drug lords or gangs? NONE! The most famous "ethnic" singer of all time died just today in his Texas home, Freddie Fender, Lung Cancer. He was 69.

Freddy Fender and Selina will be remembered. The news has talked about Freddy Fender many times today. I was living in South Texas when Selina passed, and I worked in the school system, the kids were terribly effected by the loss of her, and I believe that she will remain in their hearts forever.

If you are speaking about Freddy Fender, some people think that anything before Britney wasn't music and Tex-Mex music isn't well known anymore. If people would open their eyes and ears a little more, they would see that in all honesty, Britney and most music of today stinks compared to golden oldies.

It IS newsworthy, doesn't matter the ethnicity. He was famous and much loved and his music brought joy to many. Rest In Peace,
Freddy.

It is on the news. But sometimes important things are going on at the same time of a death and it gets pushed back or not talked about as much as other.

perhaps it is the way you look for things. you have a pre-set view in mind and search for that response. so you notice things that arent in tune with your view.

the other side of the coin is that the media of a given culture reponds to the needs, views, fears, and hopes of that culture. the dominant hegemony of the western world is middle class white. so anything not appealing to that culture gets a secondary rating for worthiness.

remember, to make money and get viewers, you need to make your views the same as the biggest group. pleasing smaller groups might make us have warm fuzzys, but doesnt make them rich.

Freddy Fender was great in his own genre, but he hadn't made anything popular for years so I imagine thats why they don't make it more newsworthy..
