The Highwayman by Loreena McKennitt the lovers died in this song based on the poem of the same name. Basically a highwayman has won the love of a girl named Bess and rides out in the night to steal some gold he promises to return to her by the moonlight on the path to her father's tavern.
Well some redcoats know of his doings and plan a trap they take over the tavern and knowing somehow of Bess' affair with the highwayman they tie her to the foot of the bed and place a musket with the barrel pointing at her heart in front of her she can see the road her lover was going to take.
She managed to twist out of the ropes which caused her to bleed and she had enough reach to touch the trigger of the musket. She heard her lover' horse's hooves galloping down the road and saw him in the distance she had only one way to warn him by firing the musket into her own chest killing herself to save him. He found out as the sun was rising and charged the tavern on his horse and the redcoats shot him down.
This is the last verse..
Still of a winter's night, they say, when the wind is in the trees,
When the moon is a ghostly galleon, tossed upon the cloudy seas,
When the road is a ribbon of moonlight over the purple moor,
A highwayman comes riding,
Riding, riding,
A highwayman comes riding, up to the old inn-door
