A good way to refresh your memory is use the Amazon.com SEARCH INSIDE THIS BOOK feature. It is located under the picture of the book cover. Put in your keyword, in this case, "barometer."
Then you find that on page 132 he called the nuthatch Barometer.

Country side. When I was a boy I could walk from the city to the country side in less than half an hour. Now an hour or more but with motorways going through it all that can't be traversed. It's not because I have slowed down, I am not an old man just a little bit over 50. But I do miss the peace and quiet, the smell of the farm. Thank god there are still birds around I love the dawn chorus. It's a pity that the majority of todays children have never met a cow or a chicken or a sheep or a pig etc, etc.

What a good book that was! I loved reading it in high school.

I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I did.
