take off the top radiator hose and then remove the gooseneck. the thermostat is in there. go ahead and change it, it doesnt cost much and your heater wont work without it. remember to get a new gasket for the gooseneck when you put it back together and make sure the surfaces are really clean before you put it back on or it will leak. you might want to replace your hose clamps if they are factory too and remember to check the fluid level in the radiator when youre done. with the hose clamps, gasket and thermostat you are only looking at about 20 bucks. good luck

Follow the top radiator hose to the top of the engine. It is held in place by 2 13mm bolts. Befor removing it be shure you have a cold engine.
next take of the hose clamp holding the rad hose to the fnamg
Next remove the 2 bolts.
Now to test it
Boil some water on the stove and drop it in. It should open very wide.
If it was me bad or not it is a good idea to replace it before winter anyway.
It cost 7-10 bucks

you do not have to have a thermostat, but if not, your heat won't work. on the top of your radiator, there is a black hose that comes out of it and goes toward the motor, when it gets to the motor that is where the thermostat is.
