This was done when the Shah still ruled Iran and was a valued ally in the region. The U.S. overlooked the excesses of his regime and considered Iran a valuable ally in case the USSR decided to make a play for Persian Gulf oil. So now it's a case of the chickens coming home to roost.....don't you think?

Bush has already been proved a liar with regards to Iran's Nuke capability! They have enriched Uranium from 0.7 to 3%! It takes 5% to run a plant, and 98% to detonate a bomb!!
