When the Soviet union existed, they acted as a counter-balance to the US.
They each kept each other in check as they were worried what the other was doing.
Now there is only the US and certain elements of the govt. seem to think they can do what they like when they like.
If there was a 2nd superpower (China for example) would that make the world a better place?

That would be the best way of creating a balance in this world, the problem is USA is so powerful now both financially as well as force. USA has leaned from the time of the cold war with Russia. The last war -which is still going on in Iraq- got nothing to do with Iraq, Alqaeda, Saddam or even WMD, this war had only one purpose: The only country who got the potential to counteract USA is China, the only obvious outcome of this war is the price of the oil barrel from $25 to $72!!! Have you ever wondered why the price gone up? Now USA in the Gulf controlling Iraq, Saudi, Kuwait, Emirates as well as Lybia.... USA has manipulated OPEC and pushed the prices up to make it difficult for countries like China and India who are progressing extremely fast but got no oil resources. The only way to slow these countries progress is by making it difficult to obtain the energy necessary for their factories and industry to expand and progress, so they will always remain retarded. This is the main reason for the war. It is the power Oil and Force!!!

The two greatest superpowers after the Second World War were the United States and the Soviet Union (What is now Latvia, Estonia, Lithuania, Armenia, Moldova, Georgia, Uzbekistan, Ukraine, Belarus, Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Azerbaijan and Russia.) The Soviet Union is called the USSR (in Russian: Союз Советских Социалистических Республик or Soyuz Sovetskikh Sotsialisticheskikh Respublik and in English: Union of Soviet Socialist Republics)

I do not think we need any superpower. It's like living in a time bomb. Keep checking who is going to press the button.

Unfortunately we think there is only one superpower. That is US. They are the one who decide what needed to be done in planet earth. The 2nd superpower may be some where waiting to come out and the world will be a sad place to live.

The world already has multiple superpowers, but all but the U.S. keep a low profile, in large part because they can. The others realize that the U.S. provides its own built-in counter-balance, as anyone who pays attention can easily see. People may get impatient waiting for things to go the way they'd like, but it is far better to have a suitably damped "push-pull" government which must answer to its populace than to have one-sided systems which require balance to be applied from the outside to keep them in check.

Yes. A second superpower would bring balance. China looks set to be that second superpower.

I was thinking maybe Sweden. Actually several centuries ago they were a very powerful nation in their own right. China's had their turn long ago, let another country have a turn, don't know who though, they'd all be scary if they had tons of power and the will to use it. Perhaps a country where there are no people of religion anywhere in the government............

I don't consider the US to be a super power. In order to be a super power, you have to be willing to wield power. The US isn't, therefore it's just another cut rate impersonator that can be rolled over by any country willing to fight for what it believes in. Actually, China is the only real super power right now.

thats strange that you think that. in all statistics, china is overtaking the usa. it is sad, but the usa now has no friends in the rest of the world. bush wont screw with china. or india. i do not believe the usa is currently #1, except in military force, and that cannot be subsidised indefinately.
i defiinately think china would not impose itself on other countries as the usa does. they are in iraq, the un said it was an illegal war. what will the usa say when chinese land on their soil, and start killing all the americans, calling themselves a peacekeeping force?

Well in some ways Europe is now recently united economically as a superpower. I would hope that all democracies that allow basic human rights and strive to raise themselves up "by their bootstraps" all succeed!

Go to China and live.
I don't think that you would want them as a Super Power.
As China moves toward Capitalism they will become a Super Power.
Europe which is now socialism will all be Third World Countries in 20 years.
Socialism is a loser.
