Without having snow to determine the best time, fertilize during the coldest rain fall you obtain. Remember - you don't want to wash away the fertilizer, but dissolve it into the earth. Check with the long range weather forcast before fertilizing, to make sure that you are not in for a few hot sunny days, which in turn could burn the grass roots.

rule of thumb is, you want to put down a winterizer now. usually a 4-10-10 or a 0-15-15. Not alot of nitrogen, you don't want any new growth. only wanting to prep the roots for winter time. of which your phosphorous and potassium take care. depending on the variety of grass and you square footage will depend on how many pounds per square foot you will spread. Always read your labeling. happy spreading. Also you may want to spread a fertilizer with a pre-emerge in it to help control your winter weeds!!

I'm in D/FW and fertilized a couple of weeks ago. I recommend you go to a good local nursery and ask them for the fertilizer developed at Texas A&M University for this time of year in Texas. Put the fertilizer down soon and water it in.
