I already tried using a jump wire from the "10 to GND" in the Data Link Connector as advised in the shop manual on "mx-3.com", it just blows a fuse...and the fuse it blows is for "fuel injection". It can't be this difficult to set timing in this car (or is it?).

On some of the Mazdas of that era, there is a black wire with a single connector at the distributor. Disconnect that wire. It should also say this on the under hood info tag on the car.
