It will be a special gift to you if this tree lives. Banana trees grow from the roots of older trees which have finished producing. You can usually cut into the mother plant and remove the shoot or smaller tree, taking care to obtain afew roots. As far as the soil goes, they thrive in sandy to sharp soil, and also egg shells won't hurt, but they do like the sun, and longer periods of drought.

A banana tree doesn't have roots, exactly; it has a tuber, which, if it was 3 feet tall, should have been the size of a canteloupe.

I have no idea if it would survive the transplant or not; good luck!

Keep it moist, but not muddy...it will probably survive fine..you just cannot kill these things. Good luck
