Even the worst criminals can also have a heart. They are just human beings maltreated by society and have probably no families that care for them so they commit the worst crime imaginable. Death penalty is out of the question but these criminals can help out in rebuilding an entire community destroyed by catastrophe like typhoons or earthquakes. At least they can feel a sense of worth by doing and may even transform some to look deeper into their lives. Of course, if they are really that hard to change, then feed them to the lions, joke! But honestly, they should be well-guarded with tanks and reinforcements to prevent escape. Goodluck!

As a matter of fact, my friend and I were talking about this the other day, I feel that they should be at war in the front lines. I saw a movie once, cannot remember the actor, but he needed people to fight a war and he went to a prison. He told the warden give me some men to go out and fight. The warden told the prisoners that if they went to war, they would get their freedom if they survive. Well, of course many wanted to go, and while fighting this war, they became friends and defended each other. I guess the moral of that movie was if you give someone a chance, you might find that there is a good person after all.
I think the actor was Steve McQueen, or the other actor that looks a bit like him but older. Now this was a movie, but it can become real life. If someone remembers that movie please name it. It is a real old movie.

Death Penalty.
I really cannot see the point in using taxpayers' money to keep someone like Ian Huntley (evil paedophile who murdered 2 little girls) alive. Everyone hates him. His fellow prisoners are trying to kill him all the time. He even tried to commit suicide a few times and the prison officers saved him.
Everyone in the UK wants him dead!
Why keep him alive? He's a waste of space, time and energy, not to mention money.
Same with people like the Moors Murderers and the Yorkshire Ripper. These people are just too evil for words. They will never be rehabilitated. They can never be released. They serve no purpose.
People say they should be kept alive to "suffer" for what they have done but the sad thing is psychopaths like this rarely have any conscience or guilt over their actions. It used to make me sick to read about Myra Hindley doing an OU degree in jail (on taxpayers' money) and seeing pics of her smiling and laughing in jail, after the evil b1tch tortured and murdered all those innocent children.
The Death Row thing is best. Keep them there for a while, let them suffer, feel remorse and then kill them. And give the victims' families the option of pushing the switch.
As for putting them at the front line in a war - do you really expect these evil cowards to fight? They'd turn tail and run. Soldiers need to be brave.
Phoebe - PLEASE don't insult our intelligence with that "they are just poor people misunderstood by society" crap. They "have a heart"? Yeah??? Tell that to the families of Ian Huntley's two little victims or the families of the kids killed by the Moors Murderers and see what sort of reception you get. What naive rubbish!

If the crime is severe, e.g. mindless Murder and the evidence is proven beyond doubt, I think the death penalty should be considered, why should we pay taxes to keep these people alive - and probably released back into society before they should be.
I also think that rapists and paedophiles should have their genitals amputated.

Hard labour as well as imprisonment so they pay for the cost of their own upkeep behind bars.
