most of the pee ports were on the right rear of the eng. if you don't know when the last time the water pump hsa been changed it might be a good time. on Idle the eng. could run fine but on to in it might start to run hot on top inbecause the rubber is worn and weather curled but thats a 50/50 chance. its cheeper to change than not knowing. that can cost you more money. to change the water pump first you have to remove the shift rod pin under the carbs infront lower of the powerhead. to remove the foot there is a searies of bolts around the foot and two under the tracking tab above the prop. remove all the bolts and shifter rod and it should slide out. the rest is pretty elementry. do not remove the shft rod or turn it when you take the foot off because its set for the right posisition to shift foward and reverse so don't adjust it if it shifts ok. if you need any more addvice e me at specialed@yahoo . i've got an 85hp and 3, more 115hps. I work on them all the time.

RE:
1985 Evinrude/Johnson 85 hp maintenance question.?
First, I'm a Merc. man. Have an old 74 model 85 HP Johnson. Where is it supposed to pee? Waterpump replacement generally the same as Merc ? Motor runs in barrel very well , motor doesn't feel hot after one hour of 1000 rpm running.

On an '85 it's at the Back of the lower unit,,up near the top almost to the engine.
It's pretty obvious,, about a finger sized hole,,and only thing like that in that area.
Actually,,it's a Pair of holes
On a '74,,,it does NOT have one,,beleive it or not.
I'm not certain when it was added,,but it was Late '70's at the earliest.
A '74 Johnson would certainly NOT have one.
A '85 definitely does Does.
.............................
Yes,,water pump R&R is basically the same.
Straightforward on either of those motors,,no real tricks to speak of.
If the old impeller is "Missing" some pieces,,do your best to try to find where they went & get 'em out.
...............................
"Standard reccomendation" on the NON p-holer's is to add a water pressure gauge to monitor pump operation.
They're Usually very good motors, run strong,,very solid & really pretty good on gas when set-up right on the boat.
On an '85,,,way back in the day there was a small rash of Ignition PowerPack failures.
I hesitate to say it that way,,cuz i do NOT really know how big a deal it was on an overall basis.
But,I know quite a few of fairly new ones did crap out.
Also,,I dont know what they did to "fix" the boxes,,an upgrade or superceded part,,,or if they did any changes at all????
By this time,,I'm sure any "bad" ones would long be dead by now.
But you MIGHT want to consider shopping around for a good deal on a spare to carry along?
Shouldnt be too expensive,,and could sure save a headache.

My memory says that it takes about 14 oz. to fill an empty lower unit. You fill from the drain hole until it runs out the vent. Somehow I'm not reading that in your question. It would have been better to drain the oil after using the drive or running it on a flust attachment fot several minutes. But, now just take a wire tie and use it like a dip stick through the vent hole. The oil should be just below the hole. Good luck!

If the pump is working, the "Tell Tale" or "Pee" as you call it is not needed to keep the motor cool, it just tells you that it's working at a glance, keep running it, you may hear a pop, and it will start working from the pressure pushing on the blocked hole (I've seen it happen b4)
