When I turn the thermostat on, the heater doesn't turn on. I noticed that the furnace turns on and a small flame forms inside when I switch the furnace to the on position, but no air is pumping through the house. I have central heating that runs on natural gas.

I just had a problem like this....my oil furnace actually has more than 1 breaker to it...in the house and 1 in the garage..check to make sure that they are all on.there mite be one for the fan only,1 for the boiler, and one for the temp control...if it still wont work check your blower..does it hum..check for bad wires, something stuck in the fan.....if your furnace has been off all summer and this is the first time starting it up it could take 30 / 40 mins for the systen to get up to operating temp,,around 130deg f
good luck

temporarily pass the thermostat via removing the purple cord from the R terminal and the White from the W terminal and tie them jointly. The furnace could run non-stop. If it does replace the T'stat. If no longer you have different matters with the furnace.

Sequence when thermostat is turned up:

Spark ignition and/or pilot flame (as big as a grill lighter)

Main burner ignition ( flames about like gas logs)

Heat up of firebox in one-half to two minutes

Switching-on of circulation fan

Sounds like you are getting only as far as pilot or main. You need to clarify which it is.

It sounds like you have pilot, but it is not proving without knowing what kind of ignition your furnace has I can't tell you any thing more to do.Often these symptoms are bad /dirty sensor or loose wire at best, bad ignition module/contril board at worst.Have a friend, neighbor recommend aheating man they have a good experience with to you.

The small flame in the intermitte pilot, if that does turn on and your main burners don't it sounds like a gas valve
