I live in NC and my girlfriend and I have a week off starting next week. Thinking about a road trip possibly to the New England area to see the leaves, etc. Any ideas?

Try not planning anything, not even a destination. My g/f and I used to take off when we had 4 or 5 days off. We would pack stuff, grab an atlas, pick a direction and go. From Cleveland we found ourselves up on the extreme north of Michigan once, found a wonderful small beach town in Delaware called Rehoboth, lots of places you would never plan to visit but you just happen upon them. Having no schedule you can take your time, take some back roads (way better than the interstate). On the interstate you fly by towns and never see them. On the roads you go right through them and get to see the scenery between them.. Never know what you might find. Try it.

Well, if you really want to get out of Florida, it won't take a NASA expert to explain that you will be going NORTH. You might try Savannah - Trip time about the same as Orlando-Miami - Savannah trying hard to be another imitation Kissimmee. Great new t-shirt stores, trinkets, even plastic mickeys. Almost as good a tourist trap as Saint Augustine (Wow How they have ruined that place). Or you could get on line at Paula Deen's and stand in the rain for two hours to get in to partake in a rush, rush sort of southern style dinner, Or you could just get a bit nostalgic and think you are back at MK. For a more interesting venture you may like Dahlonega, Georgia. About seven hours + from Orlando. Just great ancient mining town - Still has not quite gotten caught up in the tourist malaise. If you go to the northwest, I like Mobile, Alabama. Only a few minutes outside of Florida. I have found Mobile a great place to visit. A few hotels - maybe 4 good restaurants (with great sea food). Not quite like LBV. Disney probably gets more tourists in one day than Mobile in three years. (Only problem I-10 is about the world's most boring road.)

I live in New England. I would warn you that the roads are going to be log-jammed with leaf-peepers in the coming weeks, especially if the weather's good. Hotels, motels and everything in between are sold out everywhere. I would probably avoid New England at this time of year, to tell you the truth. Maybe try Pennsylvania instead, which is also very beautiful but less crowded (and closer to you anyway). Hershey is a beautiful area.

I bought a book at Borders "The Most Scenic Drives in America" by Reader's Digest. It lists 120 of the most Spectacular Road Trips in America. We took the ones listed for Arizona a few weeks ago. It really listed all the sites and things to see. See if your library has it, or consider buying it.

I agree that just wandering will give you the best results.

The closer you are to the coast, the more congested traffic will be, and there will be fewer ways to escape.

I'd take I-81 north (to Binghamton, NY, at the most; then switch to I-88); once you start hitting fall colors, get off and wander towards the nearest mountains. Based on what I've seen recently, I'd bet northern Penn/southern-to-central NY state will be the best - for colors and traffic.
