Don't know the Garmin, but we're chuffed with our TomTom - did us proud in rural Portugal recently.

Both have faults, i have been in a van with Tom Tom and we relied on it alot but found that it didnt like the early worns hehe, would oftern go quiet and easy to miss turn, another prob with it our had a problem with LEFT "turn left, after 300yards turn left, turn left, TURN LEFT" and oftern find it annoying drives you up the wall not the roads. If we finished in Rotherhyde and came through the tunnel and to go on the A13 you turn right, Tom Tom would say "turn around when possible", it did help but not the reliable thing. True account here and hope it helps
