We're so very sorry that we cured malaria. WE shiver with shame when we think about the native customs like cannibalism that we stopped. European colonialism stopped fratricial Aftrican warfare. The Europeans are gone and fratricide has returned, to the pride of some of the tribes that win in the short run.
We can't help it if the natives in Africa, the new world, Australia and New Zealand are fascinated by our spiritless and faithless inventions such as motorcycles, self-propelled vehicles, stainless steel and iron pots, immunizations, photography, motion pictures, aircraft, television, as well as our areas of millions of square miles in North America and Europe that are entirely free of tribal fratricide.
We're just not as groovy as those cultures. Sometimes we mix things together from all cultures --this is how rock and roll came about, originally lyrics and song tacked on to boogie woogie piano dance music. It's taken over the world! Turn on a radio in any city anywhere in the world. If you can't find rock and roll, you're in a dictatorship. Guaranteed.
I'm turning on my radio now, to listen to the Beatles. Who'se side are you on?

Why, it wasn't only the white Europeans that enslaved and took land, look further afield and you will find the rest of the world and not just Europe had a hand in it too, no amount of apologising from anyone in the world will help the ones it happened to well over a hundred years ago will it.

History is full of people invading, enslaving and killing each other. The African chiefs often sold their own people, the Ancient Greeks and Romans captured millions of slaves, the Ottoman Empire thrived partly because it captured numerous ships and took the passengers/ sailors prisoner and used them as slaves - these included white Europeans but that fact is happily overlooked. Look at Britain for example. No one even knows what it is to be truly British because the Celts and Saxons were defeated and overrun by Normans, Romans etc. Who should apologise to whom? As other respondents have pointed out they didn't do anything, I didn't do anything either. What will it do? And where do you draw the line? How far back into history do you want people to apologise for?

Before I say anything else, could you please give chris j ten points for the best answer?
Here's my answer; I have a friend who said to me one time that she is so ashamed of her past...she's white, by the way...and it breaks my heart that she feels like this. I try to tell her all the time that SHE did nothing, but she still says that she feels like she can't accept her races history knowing the horrors committed. I don't really know what to say when she says this.
I feel the exact same way chris j does and that's all anyone can do now. Besides, an apology would be too little too late, eh? I don't think we should dwell in the past. We are here in the now and that should be our concern.

We cannot apologize for what our ancestors did, but it would be nice to help all those native americans, africans or all those people from any tribe in the world that is still enslaved by racism coming from the white europeans.

Not all people of European decent have done that. It is actually not limited to Europe though. There have been various Chinese empires, African empires, Syrian and etc...that have done the same thing. It is what happens when an empire falls and it does cause alot of confusion in history, but that is the way the world is.
I don't think anyone needs to apologize, but we don't need to help one another out. That's what will make this world a better place.

i am descenced from the Blackfoot tribe fo the Native Americans.
and we really do not care much anymore. we know that we screwed up when we trusted the white man. but it could have been much worse. russia could have gotten here and really messed us up. at least the white europeans eventually made some attempt at amends.
and we know that it is the duty of our people to look foreward and not back. there is nothing in the recent past but pain and suffering. now we look to the future and what we have to do to make the world good for our people again. we get incvolved in the government of the white man and we change things from there. we are re-forging the honor of our people and our connection with the land. as our people become strong again we take hope in the future.
an apology from the white europeans... is worthless they speak with forked toungs and many faces.

Well keep in mind, none of us where alive back then. We cant control our ancerstors. Yes, it was wrong, but every country and ethnic group has done something that wasn;t all that great or kind in their history, its not like they didn;t do similiar things. Bu no that doesn;t justify us kicking them out of their land And yes, apologizing would be polite, but it wouldn;t give them their land back. And once a culture is destroyed, it can never be brought back.

I don't know. I think that it is hard to judge when looking back through the centuries, at a time when values and standard were so different.
I do, however, think that the current, white inhabitants of Australia, New Zealand etc have a long way to go in their treatment of the aboriginal people of their lands.

What good does it do. Dragging up the past reopens old wounds and resentment sets in. I am sure I am very sorry for enslavement, but I didn't do it and am not going to in the future, so I don't think apologies work when we don't understand why it happened in the first place. Let sleeping dogs lie. My opinion, sorry if it offends.
