You don;t need to mention anything. Just list the dates you worked - from and to. When you apply - if you have the skills and abilities a potential employer is looking for, they will ask about the time of unemployment. I had that issue as well. I was applying for my greencard at the time of unemployment so i had a period of time that was unaccounted for. Also, many applications ask for reasons regarding a gap in employment. Remeber, when writing resume, you want them to be asking more about you - an interview - don;t give it to them all at once!!

The truth is a good place to start. I was out of work for more than a year to be with my daughter due to a terminal illness before she passed. My resume states "caring for my terminal child." That was the truth.
