Alltel does offer 3 types of preaid plans (U prepaid): paid by minutes, paid by day, and pay by month. (Alltel also offers a preaid cell phone set as low as $9.98. )
As the name says, the paid-by-minute plan charges you 15 cents perminute when you make a call or per-incomming or per-outgoing text message.
Pay-per-day, I think this is the best value deal. It will charge you 75 cents per day and you get to choose two add-on options for free. The add-on options are "free nights & weekends", "free mobile to mobile" and "unlimited text messaging". It charge you 10 cents per minute during the day time.
The website for the plan details and selection of cell phones available for the prepaid plan can be found at:

If you make very few calls like a do each month, I use prepaid Cingular. A $25 prepaid card is good for 90 days, and 100 minutes. This plan is perfect for me, becaus I only spend $25 every 90 days, and I never exceed 60 minutes in the 3 months time limit.
