A common misconception is that Jehovah's Witnesses go from door-to-door because they feel it is their duty to "sell religion" to a householder. In fact, Jehovah's Witnesses would go from door-to-door even if there were no hope that anyone would change their religion, or even if no one would listen to them!

That is because Jesus Christ specifically assigned the house-to-house ministry to the Christian congregation, with no regard for specific results.

(Luke 10:1,2) After these things the Lord designated seventy others and sent them forth by twos in advance of him into every city and place to which he himself was going to come. 2 Then he began to say to them: “The harvest, indeed, is great, but the workers are few. Therefore beg the Master of the harvest to send out workers into his harvest.

Jehovah's Witnesses are trained to direct attention to the bible, and move on when their message is unwanted. Since each congregation in the United States tries to call at every home in its territory at least twice each year, there is strong motivation for them to move on where little interest is shown. Also, the Scriptures help the Witnesses to expect little interest from most:

(2 Timothy 4:3-5) For there will be a period of time when they will not put up with the healthful teaching ...and they will turn their ears away from the truth, whereas they will be turned aside to false stories. You, though, keep your senses in all things, suffer evil, do the work of an evangelizer, fully accomplish your ministry.

Witnesses of Jehovah are motivated by love. Love for Jehovah and for our neighbors. If somebody had keyed your car and a witness to this event didn't say anything to you, wouldn't that tick you off? And, a paint job is replaceable. Your life isn't. Jehovah doesn't want anybody to be destroyed, including you. The Witnesses continue to make visits because one never knows when a householder will have a change of heart and become willing to learn.

Its a useful exercise for us all to sit and think whether we all set out to go and try and sell people stuff...what are we all trying to prove....? it doesnt matter if you have a religious faith or not, so many of us are out to push what we believe to be 'reality' or 'truth' on others...just look at some of the passion and earnestness on yahoo answers from people who are desperate to prove that there is nothing beyond life here on earth.

I think we would all be so much happier if we could de-construct all of these religious and sociological labels and just sit around and have a nice cup of tea and a cadbury's chocolate mini-roll and have a bit of a laugh about life and tried to see what more we can do together to practically reduce some of the suffering in the world. Oh and maybe we could actually DO something about it then, rather than sitting on our arses and talking about it...

I really dont know but i wish they wouldnt i cannot stand the way that just seeing them approach make me hide behind the sofa and cause me to behave unrationally, i think the best way to deal with them would be to invite them in and start trying to sell them a vacuum cleaner or some other product it would soon get around their "community" and you would never be bothered again

No, I genuinely have on no account genuinely replaced someones faith and consider on existence in simple terms because of fact I grew to become up at their door. i'm fairly specific the only individual who has ever performed it quite is Jesus. yet we do pass to human beings's doorways with the comparable message as Jesus had and that itself is existence changing! So i'm able to declare as one among Jehovah's Witnesses i've got seen human beings substitute religions and their lives (for the greater desirable) via accepting the Bible's message with Jesus teachings. it quite is a reasonably astonishing ingredient to work out. Did you ever substitute somebody's ideas or thought approximately JW's in simple terms via asking your questions like this? in all probability no longer.

There was this guy in Bury recently shouting, literally shouting, this spiel, and I told him to shut up. I don't know f he heard me, but in many religions, if you "convert" (or "save") others, you get a "higher place in heaven". So it's either selfishness or righteousness. But I do wish they'd go away and shut up. Nothing wrong with being religious if you're that gullible, but really, don't force it on other people.

mormons sell nothing. If they do visit they will offer to give you a book.

mormon population growth is exponential (look it up if you don't understand- it certainly can't grow that fast and still be called little or inbred)

How come ignorant people feel the need to be rude about others?

They believe that it is their work to 'spread the word' whether you want to hear it or not. If they are ridiculed or abused as a result of this they compare it to Jesus's persecution and therefore carry on regardless as Jesus did.

Because in the Bible it tells you to go out and spread the word.

Besides, its big business, always has been and probably always will be.

I used to get a lot of visits in my previous house and to be honest most of the time I sent them on their way but once or twice I let them in and actually learned something. For sure on one occasion I learned that a particular doctrine was not for me but hey they were nice about it and they learned a bit about me too. Hits both ways.
