Rock outcropping, rotten snow, open terrain, over-reflection of sunlight - any of these could be what you were shooting at. They may have had the distinct or indistinct characteristics of a wolf. As the brain requires very little information to process what it thinks it sees,ESPECIALLY when hunting, the odds are very good that you shot a patch of water.

Maybe it was Amarok... Amarok is the name of a giant wolf in Inuit mythology. It will hunt down and devour anyone foolish enough to hunt alone at night.

Either that or you saw a mirage...

The Arctic Mirage
Since superior mirages are caused by cold air lying beneath relatively warmer air, they are most common and strongest in the Earth's polar regions where the surface is covered by ice or snow or cold seas for most of the year. The arctic mirage is a term that has been applied to superior mirages in northern polar latitudes, particularly when the conditions alter the appearance of the earth's horizon to allow us to see objects that actually are located well beyond or below the geometric horizon.

Also know as the hillingar in Icelandic, the arctic mirage generally forms under conditions of a uniform and widespread temperature inversion. When the temperature rises at a rate of 11 Celsius degrees per 100 metres (6 Fahrenheit degrees per 100 feet), the Earth's horizon will appear flat. If the inversion becomes stronger, the horizon will then appear to rise vertically from the flat position. Thus, when the inversion gradient reaches 18 C deg/100 m (10 F deg/100 ft), the observer will have the illusion of being in a saucer -- that is, the horizon appears as turned upward.

Superior Mirage allows sight beyond the horizon: scale is greatly exaggerated.

Many beliefs and legends of northern inhabitants and European explorers can be attributed to the arctic mirage, and the exploration of polar regions has been both enhanced and hindered by the condition. Many early explorers reported landscape features in polar regions that never really existed but were mere illusions.

PS you should never shoot wolves!! Never kill an animal you aren't going to eat, otherwise its just cruel and egotistical.... maybe that was the spiritual message, that you aren't supposed to kill wolves, maybe they are your spirit guide and you would have learned something if you had not shot at it.... maybe it was Amarok, the great hunter teaching you a lesson.

It's not time to see anybody. I believe that there is a life outside the realm of our existence. many things could have happened here. 1 you maybe experienced the spirit of some native american 2. these next ones may be hard for you to fathom. a possessed wolf? 3. a werewolf. I told you these may be strange.I do believe they exist. reason some of my own experieces. where I live, In wisconsin, there is a legend. it's called the bray road werewolf. this creature is real. although walworth county is close to 100 miles from where I live, I 've seen some pretty strange this my self, and I feel normal. think of it this way you got to see something that no one else has. don't sweat it, you are just fine.

Let me think here for a moment...

Two viewers plus hunter = 6 eye balls
Range to target = 350 feet.
Site of kill = State of Alaska
Time of kill = Fall Season, heavy snow on ground.
Quantity of Alcohol Consumed = Not more than 3 drinks.

Hmm-m.
Bullet impact Result = Target dissappeared. No Trace.

Hmm-m.
Recommendation: Plan on using a Remington Model 70
in 270 caliber next time instead of the 50 caliber single
shot sniper rifle and silver tip ammo. More of the target
may be left for you to pick up. This appears to be just
like hunting squirrels with a 30-06. Just a big poof.

Regards,
Zah

In all seriousness, he went down a hole and you
didn't see/couldn't spot the hole. He probably died
down there in that hole licking his wound if he could.

It could very well be a spiritual thing, but is unlikely in most cases that more than one person could see it unless everyone was equally intuned to it, which very rarely if ever happens.

That said, I don't have any explanation for it. I do believe you though. There are lots of things that have no tangible explanation but they do occur nonetheless.

If you were to see anyone, a shaman would be your best bet. Or ask at a local metaphysical shop what they would suggest.

Alaska's huge ... which part were you in?
Some native american alaskan tribes belive in the Red Devil ... buy Wiki doesn't tell much about this forklore. <1> While others would call this a "khaa yakghwahéiyagu (ghost, revenant)". <2> When I searched for all the other Alaskan tribes ... well, I got too many and need to narrow this down by the region you were in. <3>

it was a spirit wolf ,you will see him again at the point of your own death
it was a bad move to do that ,wolves are benificial spirits
usually on good peoples sides ,your offence will have its ending
i was once followed by a wolf for 3 days hiking in the columbian rocky mountains near Jasper,he never harmed me and on the third day came close enough to spit at.
he was my guide through those 3 days.

Sounds like a spiritual encounter... not so rare, actually.

Don't expect proof for everything.

I would see a shaman, not a shrink, if it still bothers you. That spirit might be hanging around still, if you're still thinking about it.

Happens to the best of us... could even be protecting you.

it could have slipped into a burrow. The wolf was probably white and well camoufalged in the snow. Wolves are sneaky creatures and it might have slipped into a den before dying a painful and agonizing death.

Was it snowing that day, cuz maybe it still crawled away, and the snow covered its tracks(of course it would have to be snowing pretty hard). maybe it was a dream you had and you think its real now, especailly since this story is 20 years old.
