To become a US National Master is somewhat easier than to become an internationally (FIDE) titled played with an FM, IM, or GM title. (US NM is less than a FIDE FM).

You should set manageable yearly goals, such as increasing 100-200 points a year. Read information on chess theory, and do tactical exercises. If you want to take online lessons, I recommend looking for a teacher on ICC (Internet Chess Club). See link.

It's not a question of "how long does it take" to become a National Master... titles are not given just for playing chess for a certain length of time.

Titles are awarded based solely on performance...if you go out and win the required number of tournaments, you will be a National Master. Might happen in two years, might happen in ten years...might never happen... it's actually up to YOU as to how long it will take, and how much work you're willing to put into it.

You also didn't mention whether your rating of 1300 is based on USCF performance, or based on playing against Chessmaster opponents. Online and software-based strength ratings are not the same as ratings achieved by playing OTB.

If you're serious about it, get a coach. How is anyone on Yahoo answers going to know how long it will take you to reach a National Master level? That question can't be answered just by telling us what your rating supposedly is.

takes a while to become over 1500 and a lot of practice. Chances are, get a chess coach, find a local chess club, and just play
