Any type of virus demands formatting and reinstalling the OS, what ever Windows, MAC or Linux system he is using, upgrading would be best, and then once that has been done, installing a good anti-virus software, like Mc Afee or Norton and keeping it updated with the on-line updated free with the purchase of the software.

Once he reinstalls the OS the sound drivers for the card will reappear or go the Windows Update page a check the drivers section to see if there are newer version for that sound card available, they do this occasionally.

Greetings!
He must first identify the virus. (program) He may google or check the Norton site. He may use software to isolate and remove it.
If he identifies it, the best way is to do it in the safe mode, so it can't reload at the next boot.
Most virus's attach themselves to a boot.ini file to assure that will happen

Good Luck

first, remove the trojan.
then reinstall the sound card driver.
you may have to go to control panel>sound/audio devices and specify the sound card as the output/playback device.
