1. have you left your baggage unattended at the airport for any period of time?
2. Has anyone strange approached you at the airport?
3. Has anyone given you "gifts" with no identifiable tracing?
outside of the US:
1. are you married, if so, why are you traveling alone?
2. what will you use this (insert any object here) for?
3. Have you made plans for your visit?
4. How long will you be staying with us?
5. Are you planning on extending your visa if the need comes?
6. Are you aware of the list of items we ask our visitors to declare?

The longest look/stare I ever got was going to Moscow on an American passport in '82. They sent a customs guy (KGB) to make friends with me and take me out for drinks to show me how Scandinavian girls used to shake it in their hotels w. discos for foreigners, he even turned up again when I left! He bought the drinks, I gave him a pair of old Levis.

on one of my returns from mexico in the 70's the border patrol asked me where was i from.. when i answered "little rock, arkansas" he said "you sure are" and waved me on thru.

that has always been good for a laugh.

me "ummmmm....NO!"
border patrol "then why do you smell like tequila?"

i was carrying across to the us. if you have something on you, stand right behind someone in the que, and put your bag right by theirs. for me, the sniffer dog appproached from the rear, then sat facing the old lady in front of me (THE SIGNAL) she was promptly escorted by security off somewhere, and i carried on.
