For slow paced songs I suggest something like Scarling's "City Noise" or Garbage's "#1 Crush" and maybe their "Why Do You Love Me?" song. Also try Incubus's "Stellar". For a fast paced techno song you could try Darude's "Sandstorm" but that might be a little too fast for a homecoming dance. For another techno song you could try The Prodigy's "Charly". You could also play an edited version of a popular hip-hop song like anything by 50 Cent or Snoop Dogg.

For high school? You poor guy. Using CD's???
Wannabe.
Just kidding. I'm no elitist but if you DJ on a regular basis you should already know what to play and what not to play. Being asked to play music at a high school dance with your dual deck cd player and a sound board doesn't neccessarily make you a DJ. Unless you DJ at a strip joint and have played nothing but sex music for the last 4 years but continue to work there because you get to see naked girls for free.......not that i did any of.....that...(okay i dated a stripper but that's all)
It's actually easy to find out first take a look at radio airplay charts and Billboard charts for the last four to six months or just take the last 3 or 4 NOW cd's and use them too. Check Amazon.com and see if any of those top songs have remixes available (they usually do).Remember unlike a club where you have a theme usually at a high school dance you'll have to play a variety even stuff you don't like. If you have iTunes check the most downloaded and see what people in your audience's age group download.
To verify lyrical content just run by http://www.leoslyrics.com and type in the name of the song and you'll get the lyrics so you can go over them on your own. You'll also want to ask the school you're DJing for if they have a list of banned songs or subjects.
What usually works for me though is dance remixes of older songs (yeah even the high school kids have some sort of nostalgia for old school do you know how many times i was asked to play Rumpshaker by a group of girls in their early 20's) i like and have used these..
Owner Of A Lonely Heart- Max Graham VS Yes
Long Time- Toxic Avenger (remix of the Boston song)
Eric Prydz - Call On Me (samples the Phil Collins hit)
DJ Sammy- Boys of Summer, California Dreamin' and Why? (the Annie Lennox version)
Becky Baeling- Heaven Is A Place On Earth (my wife likes this remix/cover version)
Lost Brothers- I Need You Now (remix of the song from The Lost Boys)
Sarah MacLachlan- most all of her songs have been remixed
You can also check remix cd's like Ministry of Sound's cd's and Ultra Dance for pop songs remixed as well. Some of these should be available from iTunes. Remember find songs that are newer on the charts and see if remizes are available.
Because of You (Jason Nevins Club Mix)/ Kelly Clarkson
Lose My Breath (Peter Rauhofer's Breathless Club Mix)/ Destiny's Child
Toxic (Armand Van Helden Remix)/Britney Spears
Listen To Your Heart/ DHT
Starry Eyed Suprise/Oakenfold (been around for a while but people seem to like it still perfect for an early track ...we're gonna dance all night to this dj..you remember it)
Also songs they've heard on TV shows and commercials..
Galvanize - The Chemical Brothers (always a crowd pleaser used by Budwesier..the Don't Hold Back there's a party over here...song)
Benny Bassai- Satisfaction (played on a Burger King commercial)
Here With Me- Dido (played on ER think it was on Grey's Anatomy once)
He's A Pirate - DJ Tiesto (Pirates of the Carribean remixed by the worlds 3 time greatest DJ)
High schoolers are more apt to dance to stuff they know depending on where you are. Once again always find out as much as you can about your audience....oh and take a tip from the mantra of electronica/techno DJ's....just play the music they don't care what you have to say.
Oh yeah MIX....they may be high school kids but if you have the gear to mix cd's then do it and i don't mean play a different style every other song. Just because you make a cd of various songs does NOT make it a mix cd. I mean mix the beats make them continuous.
If you are using turntables for some songs give them a couple of scratches and loops here and there maybe do some beat juggling make them feel like they're at a club without being in a club. Just remember you will have to play a lot of slow songs too because the girls will want to slow dance with their boyfriends because they'll be broken up by their first year of college.
Music to Avoid...metal, goth (hey i love it but this is a high school dance most likely), music from any Nick or Disney tv show,

EmTay21: Yes, but the school has a policy about the songs that's being played.... They don't want inappropiate songs being played at the dance...
But get edited versions of the songs you like...or what's ever on the radio...

Check out Billboard or other locations to find popular music. If you have a question about the artist and their lyrics, check on amazon.com to see if it is rated for explicit lyrics and such. It doesn't matter what kind of music you play as mush as if the kids will like it.

You are a D.J., and don't know what to play? ....Go to www.Billboard.com, and click on the hot 100 button. Then listen to a local "mix" or "hot" radio station. That should clue you in.

Turn on the radio. The kids would probably not like to hear anything else.

If you are a so-called DJ, isn't it your job to set up your own playlist. WTF? Everybody is a DJ!
