Because both the Republicans and Democrats have abused their power to exclude third parties from debates and force third party candidates to get tens of thousands of signatures just to get on the ballot. The two major parties are automatically on the ballot and in the debates.
If this were a pair of businesses colluding to pressure out competition the FTC would bring an anti-trust lawsuit and force them to split up.
We need to abolish the party system entirely and force every one to run as an independent, on the issues and only the issues.

There are many political parties in the U.S. They're just not that popular with the every day voter. Besides the Democrats and Republicans there is the Independent Party, the Communist Party, the Green Party ( which I assume is our version of National Socialists ) and a few others. If there was another party that I thought had a chance at taking control of our run - away government, YES , I would take an active participation in it. I believe this country has been dominated by the Democrats and Republicans for so long that there is no REAL difference in between two.

A third party did make a difference in the US. It was called the Republican party, and it came out of nowhere with a hot candidate named Abraham Lincoln to blow his former, now disintegrated party--the Whigs-- and the Democrats, the Southern Democrats, and the Constitutional Union party out of the water.
Lincoln, by the way, had assured voters in 1858 that he was "not in favor of bringing about in any way the social and political equality of the white and black races."
The two party system isn't written into the Constitution at all, but people sure defend it like it is. It's just a tradition, and traditions change, just like voters; values.

The major reason why there are no major third parties in the US is that it's really hard to win a seat in Congress. In order for a third party to be able to pull this off, it needs to convince more people in a given state or congressional district to vote for that party than to vote for the Republican or Democratic candidate, a number that, in practice, would probably be at least 30 or 40% of the vote. This is somewhat like an upstart soda company having to outsell Coke and Pepsi somewhere in order to become competitive. Other countries with major third parties tend to have electoral systems that allow candidates to win seats without winning an outright majority somewhere. For example in Holland any party that gets at least 0.67% of the vote in an election gets one of the 150 seats in the national legislature. Most interest groups that might form an independent political party in those countries tend to become interest groups within a US political party, trying to influence its platform.

God that sounds like a GREAT idea. I would be ALL FOR IT except for one thing.
People (voters and politicians) tend to see things in Black or white. There is a grey area in everything and that's where the third party would fit in nicely. Damn good idea! Yes I would actively participate.

If there was a viable option to the two parties we have now, you best believe I would be voting for them. I would also do anything I could to promote that party also.

it would take the collective decisions of a lot of people for a third party to gain leverage. even then, im not one who thinks that a thrid party per se is the solution to all of our political problems. if its the neo-nazi party, no i wouldnt join it.

If you don't feel that American politics are working correctly then you should start your own third party and see how it goes.
