William Penn was the guy who got the right from the king of England to take ownership of as much land as he could travel in one day, for a new colony. He was smart enough to get a team of horses in place so that when his first one got tired he could switch to a rested one that was waiting. He ended up with a big parcel of land. Since sylvan was the Latin phrase for a woodland he named his forest-covered area "Pennsylvania"

Actually PA origin is due to a Family Debt. William Penn, the founder of the state acquired the land from the King of England in the 1700's. As a Quaker (Yes, that's him on the Quaker Oats box), he faced religious persecution for not being a member of the Church of England. He & his followers were looking for a place to start anew in the Americas. It just so happens that Penn's Father was a Royal Navy Admiral. The King owed the family money. So he cut a deal with William Penn. Instead of money, take this land in America and we are even? Deal was done!!!!!! The Quakers left England & the rest is history....

Rough translation, it means "Penn's Woods" named by good ole' William. He was a cool dude, he was actually one of the few guys that semi- got along with the Native Americans already here. And wierdly enough he was a player back in his day. Well documented, that he was always with different girls at parties. I guess the girls really like their portly biofocalied men back then?

William Penn came from England on the ship "Welcome" in 1682. During that year, another 23 ships brought other Quakers to what would become Pennsylvania.
