With older versions of windows, F5 use to take u straight into safe mode & F8 would take you to the options screen to b able 2 choose safe mode or other...

Normally F8, however I have worked on PCs where its something else like F5 or F10.

I think you hold down F5. Make sure you hold it down less it will not work.
